Marianthi Hatzigeorgiou
Administrative Fellow 2018-2019
Marianthi Hatzigeorgiou joined Anne Arundel Medical Center (AAMC) in June as the Fiscal Year 2019 Administrative Fellow. A native of Indiana, she completed her Masters of Health Services Administration degree in Global Health Management and Policy from the University of Michigan in 2018. During graduate school, she worked at
the University of Michigan Center for Value-Based Insurance Design and completed her internship at the global headquarters of Siemens Healthineers in Erlangen, Germany.
Hatzigeorgiou graduated from Indiana University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience, a Bachelor of Arts in English, and a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology with a concentration in Growth and Development. Before returning to graduate school, she worked as a Program Supervisor at Parkview
Health in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Christian Balcer
Administrative Fellow 2017-2018
Christian Balcer recently completed his tenure as AAMC’s FY 2018 Administrative Fellow. He now serves as Manager, Nursing Operations, in the main hospital. In this position, he will conduct business analytics, benchmarking, facilitate performance improvement, and help implement standard work across nursing departments. He is also responsible for day-to-day operations of the patient sitter program and serves as a liaison to Kaiser Permanente. As the fellow, he worked on a wide range of projects, including: serving on the system’s Opioid Taskforce, management of payer denials, supporting hospital negotiations with its largest payer, development of the strategic vision for potential partnerships, and creation of AAMC’s first annual Health Equity Report. He also authored AAMC’s application for the American Hospital Association’s 2018 Quest for Quality Award, resulting in recognition as a finalist for the prize.
Prior to joining AAMC, Christian completed his Masters of Health Services Administration degree from the University of Michigan and his Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Operations from Calvin College. He has previous experience interning at a variety of organizations: Holy Family Memorial, Spectrum Health, and University of Michigan Center for Value-Based Insurance Design, and Goldman Sachs. He is an active member of three professional associations: ACHE, NAHSE and HFMA.
Sarah Haas
Administrative Fellow 2016-2017
Sarah Haas serves as the Manager of Healthcare Payment Redesign Programs. In this role, she evaluates and manages new payment models and methodologies, such as: value-based contracts, care redesign programs, and Maryland’s all-payer rate-setting policies. She joined Anne Arundel Medical Center as the Administrative Fellow for FY 2017. During her fellowship, Sarah worked on a variety of projects including: service line strategic planning, financial analysis for new business entities, Emergency Department process improvement, cardiac surgery program creation, and new payment model development. Before joining AAMC, she gained experience working in rural healthcare, practice management, hospice services, and health policy. Sarah graduated from The University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in management and specialization in healthcare. She received her Master’s degree in Health Administration and Master’s degree in Business Administration from The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
Valerie Lehman
Administrative Fellow 2015-2016
Valerie Lehman is Senior Manager, Institute for Healthy Aging at Anne Arundel Medical Center. In this role, she is responsible for the operations of this new Institute, which focuses on spreading and supporting age-friendly best practices across the health system. She is also responsible for AAMC's government relations work. Prior to this role, Val was AAMC's Manager for Palliative Care and Government Affairs for almost two years. She started at AAMC as the FY 2016 Administrative Fellow. Her project work included a business plan for expanding palliative care and a Certificate of Need application for a new mental health hospital at AAMC.
Her prior professional experience includes serving as Health Policy Fellow in the Washington, DC office of Congressman John P. Sarbanes (MD-03) and in various program support positions at the Institute of Medicine (now the National Academy of Medicine) for more than three years. Val first developed her interest in health care by interning for Congressman Patrick J. Murphy (former PA-08) in 2010 while the Affordable Care Act was being crafted and voted on. She graduated from The George Washington University with a Master of Health Administration degree in 2016 and The Pennsylvania State University's Schreyer Honors College with a BA in International Politics in 2009.
