• Mammography (Breast Imaging)

    What is a mammogram?

Digital mammography is a quick, low-dose x-ray of the breast. There are two types of mammograms. A screening mammogram checks for breast cancer when there are no signs or symptoms of the disease. A diagnostic mammogram closely assesses a breast lump or other symptom to check for the possible presence of breast cancer.

    Who should get a mammogram?

Mammograms are the most effective way to detect breast cancer before there are any signs or symptoms of the disease. Doctors recommend women age 40 and older should have a mammogram every year. However, if you have a family history of breast cancer, you should speak to your doctor about getting a mammogram sooner. Following these guidelines to detect breast cancer early improves the chance of early diagnosis and successful treatment.

    The AADI difference

    • We only use digital images and offer 3D mammography, which means a better exam for you with the lowest radiation exposure possible. Digital images allow us to detect abnormal breast tissue more clearly and reduce the need for follow-up tests.
    • At AADI, radiologists with special training in breast imaging interpret every mammogram.
    • We exceed the American College of Radiology’s breast imaging requirements by also offering breast ultrasound and breast MRI.
    • AADI was the first in Maryland to earn the Breast Imaging Center of Excellence award, first in Anne Arundel County to offer stereotactic breast biopsies and first to open a comprehensive breast health center. This center includes AAMC’s Risk Assessment and Prevention Program.

    How to prepare

All you need is a doctor’s order. Don’t wear any cologne, perfume, deodorant or powder before your mammogram. If you’re pre-menopausal and have breast tenderness during your period, you may want to wait until after your cycle to avoid added discomfort. It’s important for our radiologists to access your last mammogram so we can compare results. If your last mammogram was not at an AADI location, please have your doctor send us the results.
